My memory is particularly sensitive to smell. And when it comes to strawberries, I don't think there is another smell that brings back more to me. (Maybe Old Spice but that's a different story.) I remember picking strawberries in my Grandma's backyard patch for years and years. Hundreds and hundreds of bright red juicy tasteful nuggets. So I knew that when we planted our garden, there would have to be a strawberry patch.
Every morning, my kiddos run out and search out the berries that have turned red enough to be picked. I used to try and ward them off so we would be able to actually pick enough to make shortcake or something, but not anymore. They love it-and I remember how happy I was being given free reign in my Grandma's strawberry patch so I let them at it. They run back in every morning with their little squishy hands full of berries and we wash them off and they eat them for breakfast with some toast or cereal. Some really good new memories in the making. :)
On other notes, I just received an email from the crew at Better Homes and Gardens telling me that they have started a new blog - Better Blog. They were writing to tell me that they were linking my blog-how flattering! I adore their magazine and know thier blog will be chock full of inspiring posts so I thought I would pass it along to you guys. :)

Mmmmmmm, strawberries! I love them and how they smell. Great way to let your children make some memories too. :D Going to check out the Better blog!

My mom has a huge strawberry patch that my girls "attack" every weekend when we are up at the lake. According to my girls, there is not a strawberry in the world that tastes as good as 'Mimi's Strawberries'! As a child, I loved eating the strawberries, but not so much the picking. Every so often, there was a little garden snake in the strawberry patch...EEEEK! That was enough to keep me away.

What SWEET memories indeed!
We had a patch at our house growing up.
We'd travel a lot and come home to them eaten up by our elderly neighbor who claimed "the squirrels were at em, so I figured I'd get 'em first!"
;) Likely story!

I love picking strawberries too. I don't have quite as fond memories considering I use to pick berries for work :), but I can't wait to plant a nice big patch of berries in our yard. I love fresh, juicy strawberries. Yum!

Hi Sandi! I love those pics!! Thanks for sharing! The one reminds me of the poppy scene from Wizard of Oz. I got my hands on some of Farmers Market, I can't wait to get it in the mail and make something fab. Thanks again for your wonderful creativity!!

My daughter does this exact same thing with our cherry tomato plants! I have told her a million times to WAIT and we'll pick a bunch all at one time but she can't wait.

Our Church planted strawberries for use in making jam for our humanitarian projects. Well at the time they would also sell any extra. Since it was the first year they really didn't expect to get any fruit at all. At least any significant amounts so they didn't plan to get any buyers. The berries were very productive that year, and as Church members they told us that we could go pick whatever we wanted! I'm telling you the berries were the size of the palm of your hands! What a blessing! My kids had to be talked into picking at least 2 for the basket and 1 for them! Wonderful flavor too.
You might want to give the kids their own patch... that way you still get a few too!
Have fun. Gardening with the kids can be a real treat!
