Yesterday was a triumphant day for me. There has been a little part of me that has been missing since I moved away from home. Hours have been spent scouring newspapers, sales and the like for the perfect replacement. Nothing held up to my expectations.
Until yesterday.
I was driving down the road with both kiddos intact and spied the words "Piano Sale". A screech of the wheels later, I was in the store checking out the sale. There were good deals on new ones, but I haven't wanted a new one. I specifically wanted an old one that I would have not qualms about using as a blank canvas. There it was in the back with a very reasonable price tag on it and a sales man saying that by chance, they could deliver it that day.
One hour later, there was a piano in my living room.
It even has ivory keys and only one is missing. (Not very common in case ya didn't know.)
I have grand summer plans for making it my own. I'm not going the route of stripping it down and restaining it-I think my plans are geared more towards painting it.
Check out this one.Hmm..whacha think? Here's a full shot of my new lovely..
Sandi

I love the idea of painting a piano!! I have just started painting furniture and it's a bit addicting! I love the green one!

How exciting! While I have never painted any of our pianos, I have always wanted to paint one pink or lime green and then put fun finials on it with other springy colors, and maybe a tassel or two. I have also thought of breaking up old pieces of china and doing some kind of collage with them. But then, we currently have an antique baby grand and it is actually my mother-in-laws, and I think she would have a heart attack if I painted it pink! Enjoy your new baby and make beautiful music!

Hi Sandi,
Love your site!
I painted my piano that was a yucky beigy-yellowish color to a bright forest green nine years ago. I'm in the middle of the process of stripping it down and painting it white. See how it looked when it was green: http://tinyurl.com/chsc23

I love it I had one just like it when I was a kid growing up. I took lessons but they didn't stick. But I still love to mess around. I vote for red or orange paint. Can't wait to see it done this summer.

Oh, a TOB, for sure! Thing of beauty! I like the painting idea too. As much joy as it is going to give you, that's the color it should be!
Happy for you!

Is that quarter-sawn oak?! If so, please don't paint it!

Oh the wood is sooo pretty! Does it really need to be painted??? Well those other ones do look pretty cute! Congratulations on your new addition!

I"m a new BIG fan of your petterns and fabrics. I think you should paint the piano w/ bright funky colors similar to your fabrics--as long as it compliments your homes decor. Ooh, paint it the color of your new fiesta-ware

Ohhh - I am of the "please don't paint it" persuasion.
But more than that - you didn't say what it sounds like. Does it have a lovely mellow sound, or is it a little honky-tonk. Is it in tune? How does it play - do the keys glide or stick? Does it make your fingers sing when you sit at it?
Ohhh I miss having a piano...

RED! I vote for red (but then if I had my way, everything in my house would be red! Many things are)

Red, definitely red. And this is coming from a professional pianist who also understands the need for the piano to also look the way you want it to. ;)

My mama painted our piano several times during my childhood..... She was painting furniture long before it was "in"..... My favorite memory of it?? When it was orange.......

We have the exact same piano...DO you have a Howard Manualo??!!! I bet it sounds fantastic...I know a place online where you can get replacements ivories, fairly cheaply. I'm so happy for you. Doesn't it feel like you are getting a part of you back...an extra toe or finger, but not in a creepy way;)

I have a kept a page from a magazine of a painted piano for years. I want to do the same thing but I haven't found mine :)

I love the red and the green, but I think you should leave yours as is. Is it in tune? If so you will have to play some and post it to your blog.

Nice - enjoy tickling those ivories!

Oh my gosh it's beautiful! The other ones are lovely but it took my breath away when I saw yours! It's SO fabulous in it's naked state! You are definately a person who loves color, so I understand your yearn to paint it....

the piano is beautiful :) i think whether you paint it or leave it, you are so creative you will make it fit right into your home. i know a lot of people say not to paint it, but i think you should do what makes you happy! :)

It's beautiful, but I vote to PAINT it! Love the green piano & the red is pretty sweet as well. But I am sure you would do an AMAZING job, whatever fab color you choose, and make it a real treasure. I totally want one!
