Just give credit where credit is due. Provide a link or a cookbook title/author.

Jen P.

Yes, I agree. Most baking recipes start with a fairly standard base, so it's hard for anyone to really claim one as their own original recipe. In my opinion, crediting/linking is probably sufficient.

I'm not sure when something becomes your own. Give credit to the original author, then have at it.
I'm so glad you're back!!!

Hi Sandi,

My feelings are when in doubt credit where it (pie) came from.
BTW your noddles look terrific too.
I have seen recipes in many blogs without credit though.
Hugs, Sharon

My daughter (over at Tuffet.blogspot.com) and I have had the same discussion. We came to the agreement to give credit, but show the changes you made. I think we all tweak recipes a bit, that's what makes cooking fun! Come by and visit me sometime! http://songberries.blogspot.com

Jamie

I've heard others say that if you made at least three changes to a recipe, it's not the original, and can be claimed as yours. For sharing, I think you say you started with a recipe from "This great source" and tweaked it as follows. Soup looks good too!

Kim

In my work experience (in what seems like a lifetime ago) you can't trademark recipes, so nobody can claim ownership of one. Just give credit to where the original recipe came if you feel like it but even that is not necessary if you have altered it even a little bit. Now bring on the pie recipe! I love crumbly topped pies, they are the best!

Hi there! I've just started a blog in which I anticipate, among other things, sharing some recipes (which may be my own or based on others'). It is my understanding that the list of ingredients as well as weights and measures is not subject to copyright, nor is the method if transcribed in your own words. If you copy the method from a book directly, then you are breaching copyright. I understand it is general practice, however, if you interpret someone else's recipe in your own words, you would nevertheless include in your post "Adapted from ". I'm in Australia and that is the copyright position here, but I've also checked the US position which is the same: http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl122.html

Perhaps this is more information than you needed, but I'd just looked into it myself so it's fresh in my mind.

Apple pie looked delish by the way, and I love your blog (have recently stumbled upon it having been a fan of your fabric lines for some time now).

Best wishes,
Amy

I've been posting intermittently about cookies from Martha Stewart Cookies and I say they are from her book and link back to her site if there is a recipe there and if not, say that you'll have to get it out of the book. I feel that it is good pr for her book since I'm talking about it and giving her credit, I just review it. I agree with the other comments. Yum, soup--we're having butternut squash soup tomorrow.

Jennifer

I was just thinking about this today. I have a recipe I want to share but it is out of a cookbook. I ended up e-mailing the author to ask if they would mind if I shared it. I'm not sure what the official etiquette would be, but I do know they make money off of selling the recipes in a cookbook. So basically, I have no clue what the proper thing to do would be. Let us know if you you find out for sure. Your soup looks really good.

I think if you can credit the author, or link to the recipe, it is good. Otherwise, that soup looks amazing. I love parmasean cheese on everything and it makes that soup look so so yummy!

Chelsea

found it!

Love those bowls! And copyright law is tricky for sure. Like quilting patterns. Just as an example, how many changes do I have to make before your pattern becomes my pattern? I always wonder about that...

Hi

I just found your site and now I am starving. It is a rainy day here and I am all snuggled and working or shall I say blog hopping on my laptop. The photo of the chicken soup and the bread. Hmmmmmmmmm good. I wish I could transport it thru my screen and into my lap. What a delightful blog.

Jessi

I was thinking about the same thing today as I took a few shots of what I cooked today. I haven't shared a recipe on my blog in a long time for a lot of reasons - this being one of them. I like what I'm hearing here though - just give credit.

april

check out this chick, shes awesome and im sure she could help.

Your chicken soup looks great! Love the apple bowls....I found some green ones on Etsy: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=37746828&ref=sr_list_6&&ga_search_query=apple+bowl&ga_search_type=vintage&ga_page=2&includes[]=tags&includes[]=title

I'm always looking for vintage stuff on Etsy so I thought I'd do a search for you :)

Posting recipes is a tricky business. What I usually do is post the recipe if it is mine, or if I made significant changes to the original (while mentioning who the original recipe was from). If it is 100% someone else's recipe or I just made a few changes, AND it is posted online, I post my lovely pictures as usual and then provide a link to the original recipe.

Lisa

I agree, I think give the orignal author credit, then have at it!
I love, love, love the apple bowls!!

I love your new self pic at the top. You look so beautiful. You mentioned that you have been trying to be more healthy. You have inspired me to do the same. Thank you.

I have seven of those! I love them. I also have the matching salad bowl, which is gorgeous. It is dk. green and has an apple blossom embossed in the bottom.

Karin

Lovely chicken soup! Here's the way I look at it- if it's your own recipe, share away. If it is someone else's recipe, give credit and share the link to their recipe or include the name of the cookbook and the author. It's really just practicing common courtesy.
Your new blog design is fab and makes me want to make another quilt with Meadowsweet. :)

Katie

I am on my last apple bowl here too. I had four handed down to me, but with a toddler in the house...well, you know.
