I sat down today to write up the apple pie recipe I raved about yesterday and started scratching my head. I realized I'm not to sure about cookbook / online etiquette in sharing of recipes. What is your experience with it?
Also - when does a recipe become "yours"? How many changes do you have to make to something to claim it as your own? Or if you start from another recipe to begin with, no matter how many changes you make to something, should it never be claimed as your own?
I just finished the exhausting (albeit fun) task of writing my first book and don't want to break cookbook sharing rules. So tell me whatcha guys have found to be the norm?
For now, I will share our lunch today. Leftover chicken noodle soup - so so good and better the second day!
That is my last apple bowl. Do you remember them? (I tried to find the post where I shared them first, but couldn't.) They have dwindled away, one break at a time and I cherish the last one, but not enough to stop using it. If it breaks, it breaks. At least we'll have memories of soups, cereal and ice cream enjoyed in the bowl.
The Lovely Bones was lovely. Sad of course, but good. Weird, but just enough. I'd recommend it.

Oh that Chicken soup looks so yummy. I hope you can share the recipe for both the apple pie and this one.

I'm not sure about recipe sharing etiquette, but the soup looks delicious, and apple bowls, well there's not too much more that needs to be said about the cuteness that is a bowl shaped like an apple! I loved the "The Lovely Bones," the book, as I have not been to a movie theater in ages, but I look forward to seeing the movie when it's released on DVD/BD :)

Okay I needed to comment...and then I thought no...and then I just felt I HAD to comment..and then maybe not...So I'll just say this...
Something as "American as Apple Pie" is in the recipe box of generations...passed lovingly from Nana to gramma to ma, to school cookbooks, to us...to everyone...to a dash more cinnimon, or a pinch more of ??.....How does Anyone lay claim to that tradition. I say pass it along, give credit if you found it somewhere...even if it's Nan's recipe box, but pass it on...how else are the next generations going to learn to bake?
that's just my 2 cents...

Thanks for addressing this recipe issue. I have wondered about this myself, as I rarely cook a recipe exactly as it's written (much to the chagrin of my best friend who likes to cook with me--she's a measure-exactly kind of cook, and I'm a "little of this, little of that" kind of cook!)

David Lebovitz has a great post about recipe attribution over at the Food Blog Alliance: http://foodblogalliance.com/2009/04/recipe-attribution.php

I struggle with the same issue regarding recipes. Sometimes I only post ones that are already available online and then link to it. Other times I post a link to the cookbook on Amazon or some other website. Personally, if I make a recipe and like it I am more likely to go out and get the cookbook so I feel like it's a win-win situation. It's tricky. Good luck!

I'm not sure legally, but I try to always give credit for the recipe. usually I will type it up as it was originally written, then include comments about the changes I made while making it.

Hi - I am the same - give credit when it's due. It's the same with some clothing designs ... I'm getting a little tired of some designers wanting their designs protected or claiming styles as their own ... eg if you look back at vintage patterns designed way back before their 'designs' were launched, you'll find dress patterns way so similiar to the so called "new" design!! By all means call it your receipe .. that's fine, but give credit to those in the past who did start off apple pies !!!

Wow, that picture is making me powerful hungry.
And when I post recipes I just give credit where it is due and take cues from bloggers like Gluten Free Girl. If it is an adapted recipe, she'll say so. If it is original, she typically gives a run by run play of the development process.
All in all, I tend to say "adapted from a recipe by___" and leave it at that.
I hope you post some recipes here...I'm a big fan of yours and also a recipe-aholic.:)

Hi Sandi, I would love to have the chicken noodle soup recipe. Will you have a cookbook coming out soon? Take Care!

As a new blogger I have wondered the same thing about posting recipes. I don't even remember where I got most of my older recipes, as they are on handwritten recipe cards. I posted my family's favorite dish "Cheeseburger Casserole" on my blog a while ago. Come by and look at it....it's so goooooooood!

oh sandi....I just have to tell you that I love your Meadowsweet line, and just make the cutest ModKid Kyoko from it. I am waiting anxiously for your new patterns to go on sale so I can make myself a Meadowsweet Easter dress! I homeschool 5 little ones, and sewing on your beautiful fabrics seems to revive my soul! Thank you so much..you minister to my heart!

Yum! I dearly hope you decide to share your apple pie recipe (I've been waiting and checking back frequently) as I love apple pie, but have never made one myself and the crumbly top just looks so delicious!
mmmm, yum!
