As promised, our first crayon upscale project. Crayon Play Clay!
I actually "developed" this recipe about a year ago but decided to wait to share it until I could be sure of its longevity. I can happily report, that if you keep in it an airtight container, it will keep for a long time! Our first few batches lasted about 6 months. Note: the wax paper wrapping in the photo doesn't count as "airtight" but it's pretty for pictures. :) We keep ours in those plastic throw-away containers.
This summer, I am bound and determined to keep my kids happy and active. And creative. I've found creativity to be the biggest self esteem booster in children (and grown ups!). Whether it is through music, art, crafts, activity - it all boils down to being creative & busy vs. lazy. And so help me, I will not have lazy kids!
So get your kids involved in this 1/3 science, 1/3 cooking, 1/3 arts/crafts, 100% fun activity.
The adults in this household enjoy it just as much as the younguns.

I just made some home made play dough last week using the same ingredients- just used a natural food dye (so my hands wouldnt stain) instead of a crayon. I also used a drop of essential oil- lavender, orange and lemon to scent the different colours. You could add glitter to make it more fun too. Sounds like fun trying a crayon but does it ruin your pans? and will this stain the carpet if it gets mushed in?

Oh I love this. And your photos are gorgeous. I am going to get myself a mostly eaten bowl of M&Ms and try this out. (Because the M&Ms are part of the process, right? :)

Wow Sandi, thank you SO much for sharing this! My kids are going to LOVE doing this! We have way too many crayons in the house so I have a feeling we will be using lots of them for this fun activity.
Have a SUPER Day!

This was so fun - and to answer a question above, it didn't stain my pans at all (I think that the oil helps the crayon not stick so much to the pan, but any that did stick washed right out) and we had it fall on the carpet and it was just like regular play dough - somewhat hard to pick out, but no more staining than anything else we've used. Plus, it is SO fun to play with while it's warm! Even my husband loved it.

How long does it take for the salt to dissolve? Just wondering if this is a quick project? Thanks! Looks like fun...

Thanks for posting this. I've made homemade play-doh with food coloring, but I'm excited to try it with the crayons.
