I haven't been to a thrift store in ages. AGES! Ok, more like 3 months, but for me-that's ages. I went last week and scored bigtime! Here are the first couple things-
So make it hard on a gal why don't you? Oh you guys have had me in stitches over the last few days. I never knew how many piggy names were out there! You guys were seriously creative and I changed my mind about 10 times. Here are some of the favorites:
Dena suggested Porka-Dot which was hil-ar-ious. You made my day be having Dustin spurt Diet Coke out of his nostrils when I told him about this one. (Go check out Dena's blog-such cute bags! And she always has the cutest shoes on!)
Kim suggested Porkahontis, much to my super amusement and everyone else that read the blog or heard the term in the last 3 days. SO creative!
Many of you pulled at my much loved name and came up with derivatives of Portabellopixie. Porkabello Pixie, Portabello Piggie-my favorite being Porkabello Piggie. Hee hee hee.
But then, there was a name somewhere on the 5th or 6th page that as soon as I read it, I knew was the winner. Did this person know that I loved this movie so much? No, I've never talked about it. I have planned several posts devoted to how wonderful this movie is, how happy it makes me to listen to the music, how many hours my children and I have rocked out to it dancing in the kitchen. But I hadn't found the perfect time yet. Until now.

Oh tell me you have seen this movie? (The starting music track today is from it.) LOVE it. If you guys had any idea how many times I listened to the soundtrack while designing the next line, you'd think it was going to be named Hairspray. (It's not.)
Now, I have to say-I recently watched the original for the first time and thought it was horrid. As in terrible BAD. If you have seen the original and have similar feelings and they have resulted in your not partaking of the remake, please rent it! I think it is the most perfectly cast movie I've ever seen! Not to mention, I found my new boyfriend in that movie.
So, Kristen, congratulations. You have picked up on my inner Hairspray vibes that I hadn't let out yet. You have the force.
For everyone else that put so much creative effort into naming Piggy Pinkleton, so sorry. BUT-I hijacked Kathy's blog today and there are even larger quantities of fabric being given away over there so you have another chance right now! And it will be readily available in days/week. That is the question. Look at these universally cute vintage wrapping papers I found. Still in the original plastic with little cards to boot. But here is the problem. When I buy vintage things, I like them to have a purpose, rather than just sit there looking pretty. Everything I buy, I use. Wrapping paper has an obvious life purpose, but would the recipient of a perfectly pretty present get it? I know you guys would..who wants a present wrapped in these pretty papers?
I'm trying to think up paper crafts to use these with. I've never really played with paper crafting beyond card making and scrap booking. Occasional origami (my brothers forte), but nothing really is standing out as the perfect project for these papers. Hmm..suggestions? I'd like to do something more creative than making them into cards..hmm..
Tori Amos has a new album out. The tunes go well with these images, nice and happy. The only concert I've ever been to is Tori Amos. But that's launching into a whole other story.
Last weekend our little town had a flea market! Imagine my surprise?! Things like that never go down around here. This was actually the first flea market I have ever been to, and it was fun! My score? There was this little old lady who had a table stacked high with vintage doll clothes. I asked her what the prices were and she hmm'd and hawed. She obviously had the same haggling skills as me. She told me $1 a piece, which I thought was a total steal. After I had given her my bounty to be counted, she said (in that adorable little old lady voice) "oh I didn't know you wanted so much!, I'll give them to you for a quarter a piece."
Ok, I can deal with that.
I spent the weekend carefully Biz-ing each piece to remove yellowing and stains. Then I really looked over each item to see where they need repairs. I'm going to work on it over the next few months and give them to Eliza for Christmas. (This will be supervised play, don't worry. No jam stains on the gorgeous doll clothes. ;)
You guys know how I feel about people throwing out treasures, again and again.. It was so cool to actually meet the lady who had collected these and to hear her story. She seemed delighted when I told her I planned to clean them up and present them to my daughter as a Christmas present. Relieved it seemed, to know they would be loved. Of course, now I have to track down a doll. Confession-most dolls kinda creep me out. "Wanted: Pretty doll that does not look like it will wake up during the night and come after my family."
Now tell me, is there anyone out there that wouldn't wear this if it came in your size? I mean, I know there are, but seriously-how cute is this coat? See you all soon. :)
A month or so ago, our local thrift store had these big gallon bags of jewelry for $15. I looked over some of them and here and there I would find such a cool piece, but for the most part, the whole bag was junk. Not worth $15. Well, when I was there the other day, they had opened the bags and were selling the jewelry at 5 pieces for $2. There were about 5 of us huddled over these huge "sand-box" type containers that literally had jewelry spilling out of them. And funny enough, we all had different tastes and were looking for different items. One person was looking for belt buckles, one was looking for shells..I was looking for the good stuff. ;) And when we would each find another seeker's treasure, we would hand it over to them. Belt buckle girl left with about 5 snazzy buckles, Shell lady left with enough shells to keep her busy for a long time, and I left with 20 pieces of awesome vintage jewelry (that they thought I was nuts for liking ;) and I paid a whopping $8.
What am I going to do with them? I'm really not too sure. Some of the earring are just too pretty to hang out in my jewelry box without a mate and I'm going to attach them to hair clips and parade them around town, clinging to my curls. Some of the other pieces I don't have immediate plans for, like my groovy owl. He was just too cool to stay behind in that big box of mostly ugly. Maybe he'll just hang out with vintage kitty watch.
Oh, and on the Austen front, I have borrowed the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice that you all made me promise to watch. (My mother is feeling totally on top of the world right now, and I will probably never live down trading in the movie for craft supplies. (See those comments!) So I promise I will watch it this weekend and you can all thank Jessi for lending it to me. :) Oh, and she gave me a few books too.

Someone's poor Auntie or Grandma is turning over in their grave right now. Look at this gorgeous quilt I found yesterday at Goodwill for $1.99. Why would someone give up a keepsake like this?! There were 2 others-a rainbow and a bouquet of flowers. When I saw them I immediately stashed all 3 in my cart. But as I was walking around I felt I should put 2 back. Partly because I hoped the "soon to be cut out of the will" person would regret their decision and come back looking for them. Partly because I was so happy to see them that I thought maybe someone else would feel the same way. Doesn't hurt to pass a little sunshine on. And partly because people that search for finds like this and who appreciate vintage things know that the hunt is a huge chunk of the fun. I don't search for hordes of things-I want a collection of vintage pieces that mean something to me. So I put those other 2 back in hopes that they will go to happy homes, and I have a little more space in my house for another day of thrift shopping. :) However-if I go back soon and they are still there, then it would indeed be a new day and since everyone else had ignored them, I wouldn't want their feeling hurt now would I? Gorgeous quilts shouldn't be homeless. Don't worry Auntie Muriel-whoever..I'll take good care of your beautiful quilt.
I hope you all have a great weekend. I am going to a wedding tomorrow which should be great fun as I made the flower girl's dress. Oh-and the bride's dress too. Yes-I made a wedding dress of which I sweat-ed bullets. But they are both gorgeous and the bride is thrilled. So unless is rips apart as she is walking down the aisle (knock on wood everyone..) I will share pictures on Monday.
